ON ADDICTION, NARCISSISM — AND THE DANCE OF DARK AND LIGHT

To view the play of consciousness — the dance of dark and light — through a different lens.

We understand positive phototropism. Plants grow towards the light. But it is the shaded side that does the growing. It is the part that reaches through darkness, pushing towards the sun. What if this is also true for us?

We all carry darkness. Some inherited. Some collected. Some imposed and absorbed. Some projected onto us and mistaken for our own.

And, in ways we cannot always see, all of it can become an invitation — to move towards greater love, beauty and truth.

Life earthside in this time is far from idyllic. What we are living through is profound. Something is shifting in the human story, and we are not simply witnessing it. We are participants.

So what do we make of what has been called the narcissism epidemic? Of the increasing visibility of self-obsession, self-serving and exploitative behaviour; of instrumentalising other people; of ego, fantasy, delusion and grandeur?

There are ancient traditions that have described something like this as a kind of collective possession — a force that separates us from what is real, from one another, and ultimately from ourselves.

And then there is addiction. Its close companion. Another force that can hijack the brain — hijack our attention and our reward systems — until ordinary sources of nourishment — good food, genuine connection, meaningful work, love — begin to feel insufficient, and are discarded in favour of greater and greater levels of dopamine from cheap thrills.

A false filling-up of a chronically empty vessel. Only nothing ever fills it. The pit remains bottomless.

Perhaps the answer is not to fight these forces, but to stop feeding them. To simply remove our attention. Because nothing fuels darkness quite like our reaction to it. Fear. Anxiety. Self-loathing. Inadequacy. Comparison. Jealousy. Not-enoughness. Pain and suffering. These can become manna to the dark. A grade supply. They fuel it, through us.

This is not spiritual bypassing. It is awareness. The work is to notice. To recognise the moment we have been pulled away from ourselves — and return. To our heart. To our body. To what we know to be true. This does not mean ignoring difficult things. We meet it, we see it, we just don’t become consumed by it.

To say no to what does not sit well beneath our skin. To speak our truth, when silence would require us to abandon ourselves. To choose love where we can.

And, moment by moment, the forces that depend upon our unconscious participation begin to diminish.

Have you noticed?

Something is changing. It has been for a while. Something big and profound.

Whether you're fully awake or still rubbing the sleep from your eyes, if you're honest with yourself, you can feel it in your bones.

We are not only bearing witness to change. We are participating in it.

Our role has been, and continues to be, to do the deep, dark, dirty work of going within.

Of meeting what we would rather not see. Of clearing out aeons of trauma, conditioning and psychic debris.

Of lifting the veil, one thread at a time.

Until we find the purest place within ourselves. And from there, shine our light.

Not from ego, not from performance. Not the carefully constructed version of ourselves we present to the world.

Something deeper, older and from the truest, purest place within. The light of source, moving through us.

Stronger. Brighter. Steadier with each passing moment.

This is the work of our time. Not to become something other than human. But to become more fully human.

To meet the darkness without becoming it. To turn towards the light without denying what brought us there. To remember that even the shaded side was part of the growing. Beauty isn't an escape from darkness; beauty is where we're going after having the courage to look at it.

We are the alpha and the omega.

The harbingers of change.

The return to grace.
